This book by Vietnamese author and anthropologist Ta Duc and American artist C. David Thomas is the result of a collaboration between these two men uniquely qualified to undertake this important project.

Dozens of books have been written about the military genius of General Vo Nguyen Giap but what do we know about coun try he loves and the forces which shaped his thinking and lead him to give up a teaching position in Hanoi to join Ho Chi Minh in the jungles of northern Vietnam in 1945, to spend most of the next thirty years building a million man army and then lead them in defeating the French and American militaries.

This book attempts to paint a picture of Giap from his birth into an intellectual and anticolonial family in central Vietnam to th time he left Hanoi as a young man to join Ho Chi Minh to to build an army to defeat those same French colonialists.
